Clara stared at the glowing digital clock on her nightstand as it flashed six oclock in the morning. Another day was beginning, but her body felt as heavy as lead. For thirty years, she had worked as the chief archivist at the city library. She loved the smell of old paper and the quiet rhythm of cataloging forgotten histories, but lately, the joy had faded. Her back hurt constantly, and her mind felt burdened by persistent fatigue. Sitting up slowly, she swung her feet out of bed and rubbed her tired eyes. Barnaby, her golden retriever companion, stretched lazily on his cotton cushion in the corner. He gave a soft whimper of encouragement before trotting over to rest his warm head on her knee. Good morning, my sweet boy, Clara whispered, gently stroking his soft ears. She pulled on a lightweight linen robe and walked into the small kitchen. Sunlight was just beginning to filter through the glass windows, illuminating her thriving potted plants. Clara prepared her usual morning meal, which consisted of warm oatmeal topped with fresh berries, pumpkin seeds, and almond milk. As she ate slowly, she opened a folder containing her pension statements.
