How to make your own bilingual audiobook

You can turn almost any text into a bilingual audiobook: something you type or paste, a TXT, DOCX, PDF or EPUB file, an original AI story written at your level, or a public-domain classic from Project Gutenberg. It alternates between your language and the language you are learning, with each word highlighted as it is spoken.

bibooks does it in 49 languages, and it is free to start: no card is needed to sign up.

Step by step

  1. Create a free account

Sign up for bibooks. The free plan includes a monthly character allowance and a one-time welcome allowance, and no card is needed.

  2. Add your text

Open the create page and choose how to add it: type or paste your own text, upload a TXT, DOCX, PDF or EPUB file, import a public-domain book from Project Gutenberg, or have AI write an original story at your level, from A1 (beginner) to D1 (expert).

  3. Choose your two languages

Pick the language your text is written in, or let bibooks detect it, and the language you want to learn. For many languages written in another script, such as Chinese, Hindi, Korean and Russian, you can also add romanized pronunciation under the text.

  4. Set how it sounds

Use the speed slider to slow down or speed up the language you are learning. Higher plans can also choose the narrator voices and the order in which the two languages are played.

  5. Generate, then listen and read along

Select Generate Audiobook. A progress bar shows each stage and the estimated time left. When it is done, open the audiobook in the reader, or download the MP3 audio and the bilingual text file.

Questions about making a bilingual audiobook

What files can I turn into a bilingual audiobook?

TXT, DOCX, PDF and EPUB files up to 10 MB. The text is extracted automatically. A scanned PDF with no selectable text cannot be read, so paste its text instead.

Is it free to make a bilingual audiobook?

Yes, to start. A free account gets 1,000 characters every month plus a one-time welcome allowance of 20,000 characters, and a single audiobook can be up to 10,000 characters long. Paid plans raise these limits.

Which languages can I use?

Any two of 49 languages, in either direction, including Tamil, Bengali, Urdu, Thai and Icelandic. Every language is available on every plan, including the free one.

Can I share my audiobook publicly?

Yes, on a paid plan. You can publish a finished audiobook to the public library, where anyone can listen and read along without an account. Audiobooks made from uploaded files cannot be made public; to share a public-domain book, import it from Project Gutenberg instead.

How long does it take?

It depends on how long your text is. While it runs, a progress bar shows each stage and the estimated time left, and the finished audiobook is saved to your library.
