Marcus looked at the warm clock on the kitchen wall. He had worked in busy restaurant kitchens for forty years. Tonight was a very special evening at his cozy cafe. The mayor and thirty guests were coming for a grand dinner. Marcus loved the smell of fresh herbs and toasted seeds in the air. A young cook named Leo was working next to him. Leo was talented, but he still got nervous under pressure. Tonight, Leo was in charge of the main dish. It was a rich roast made of chestnuts, walnuts, and wild mushrooms. The roast needed to be perfect for the hungry guests. Marcus watched Leo chop onions with great speed and skill. Outside, friendly squirrels ran happily through the garden trees. Marcus wore a clean cotton apron over his linen shirt. Suddenly, a strong smell of dark smoke filled the warm room. Leo let out a loud gasp and opened the big oven door. Black smoke poured out into the bright kitchen air. The bottom of the walnut roast was completely dark and burned. Oh no, I ruined everything, Leo cried in total panic. The mayor will arrive in only twenty minutes! Leo looked like he wanted to cry right there on the floor. Marcus placed a gentle hand on the young mans shoulder.
