A long time ago, in a village at the edge of a forest, there lived a girl named Mira.
ಬಹಳ ಹಿಂದೆ, ಕಾಡಿನ ಅಂಚಿನಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ, ಮೀರಾ ಎಂಬ ಹುಡುಗಿ ವಾಸಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಳು.
Mira was not tall and she was not strong, but she was very kind.
ಮೀರಾ ಎತ್ತರವಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ ಮತ್ತು ಅವಳು ಬಲಶಾಲಿಯಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಆದರೆ ಅವಳು ತುಂಬಾ ಕರುಣಾಮಯಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದಳು.
Every evening, her grandmother gave her a small lantern.
ಪ್ರತಿದಿನ ಸಂಜೆ, ಅವಳ ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಲಾಟೀನನ್ನು ನೀಡಿದಳು.
The lantern had a warm yellow light.
ಲಾಟೀನಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಚ್ಚಗಿನ ಹಳದಿ ಬೆಳಕು ಇತ್ತು.
Mira carried it to the edge of the village and hung it on an old wooden post.
ಮೀರಾ ಅದನ್ನು ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಅಂಚಿಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗಿ ಹಳೆಯ ಮರದ ಕಂಬಕ್ಕೆ ನೇತುಹಾಕಿದಳು.
Why do we do this every night?
ಪ್ರತಿ ರಾತ್ರಿ ನಾವು ಇದನ್ನು ಏಕೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇವೆ?
Mira asked.
ಮೀರಾ ಕೇಳಿದಳು.
Her grandmother smiled.
ಅವಳ ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಮುಗುಳ್ನಕ್ಕಳು.
