The autumn light filtered through the dusty dormer window of the attic, illuminating dancing specks of golden dust. Clara dragged another cardboard box toward the center of the room, her palms smudged with age-old grime. It had been three weeks since her father’s peaceful passing, leaving her the sole custodian of a house overflowing with memories. Having already sorted through stacks of yellowed newspapers and porcelain trinkets, she anticipated few remaining surprises. However, tucked beneath a stack of woven linen blankets in a dark corner rested a lacquered cedar chest. She brushed off the cobwebs, noticing that the chest was bound by a faded hemp cord tied in an intricate nautical knot. Kneeling on the cold floorboards, she carefully unknotted the cord and lifted the heavy, aromatic lid. Inside lay dozens of neatly organized bundles, each tied with pastel ribbons and smelling faintly of dried lavender. On top rested a small note in her father’s precise handwriting that simply read, For Clara, when the time is right. Intrigued, she picked up the first bundle and recognized her mother’s fluid, elegant penmanship on the envelopes.
