ਪਿੰਡ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਸੀ।
Surjit Singh had land outside the village.
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਖੇਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਖੂਹ ਸੀ।
There was an old well in his field.
ਸਾਰੇ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਖੂਹ ਸੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
Everyone used to say that this well had dried up.
ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਨੇ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ।
Surjit however began to clean it up.
ਤਿੰਨ ਹਫ਼ਤੇ ਉਹ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਕੱਢਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ।
For three weeks, he excavated the soil alone.
ਲੋਕ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੱਸਦੇ ਸਨ।
People laughed at him.
ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਹੇਠੋਂ ਠੰਢਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਿਕਲ ਆਇਆ।
One day, cold water came out from underneath.
ਉਸ ਸਾਲ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਿਆ।
There was very little rain in the village that year.
